creating a cardboard boxlike structure in which to neglect a plant to death, making the same drawing of an oil lamp over and over, and making plans to publicly humiliate self

most art isn't functional. I think. I guess there are lots of potters. And then some paintings are later informative. There was that painter whose paintings were studied by geographers to determine water levels.
but for the most part, not very functional.
I'm going to make a piece about this. out of cardboard. I think it will hold and kill a plant. it'll be about how art cannot fulfill basic needs.

was the concept of "decorative" even in the artist's notion of art before Manet? Is it still a part of the artist's notion of art today?

I'm looking at the art of George Condo and wondering how much the modern cartoon owes to cubism.

It seems like what the viewer and critic look for in art is evidence of intelligence. If a work seems to have been made by an intelligent individual, it is respected; if it seems dumb, it's not, almost regardless of subject matter, feat of effort, etc. It's like, the search for intelligent life in some ways.

here's Chelsea Food, possibly finished:

I was thinking something earlier about how art is the study of the perception of beauty, or just what people find beautiful, and like a negotiation with them to try to coax them into finding different things beautiful.

I did a really bad job of shrinking these images down into the post, so click em to make them bigger and undistorted.

here's Elephant Map, which doesn't photograph well:

here's Chelsea Food, so far:

some sketches by Cezanne. I'm told that, even moreso than with most painters, a Cezanne painting is something you have to see in person in order to appreciate, due to the nature of his brushwork.

this is my alter ego project
And here's my progress on Chelsea Food. Yesterday I was considering cropping out some of the left side, but now I think it looks ok. I am planning to add blue to the white space, just very subtle little marks under gesso that you won't be able to see unless you get right up on it. Hopefully that'll give the space a blue tint to compliment the orange figure.

Artists have to have websites. There's no getting around it.
I tend to shy away from the word artist, but nonetheless.

Mission Statement:
Mostly, this will be an easier way than email to show works to my girlfriend and other people I know for feedback.
I'm also going to post classmates' work here, 'cause I always take pictures of it anyway.
I will post works and artists I enjoy,
I will post proposals and statements for works I'm doing.
Perhaps draft some artist statements for myself.
and write about all of these things, in addition to any other art related thoughts I feel like recording for later consideration.

Right now I'm working on, among other things, a project I'm calling Chelsea Food. I will try to find and post the proposal that goes along with it later. Chelsea is my girlfriend, model, and artistic collaborator. She's actually a much better artist than me, but she is having an artistic dry spell right now. Click it to make it bigger, I think.
